Scam Warning Over Fake NBN Internet Call

Australians are being warned of a new phone scam which has already seen individual victims lose up to $18,000.
The cold call scam has so far targeted residents in the Northern Territory, with victims receiving a call from someone claiming to be from the NBN company.

The ACCC said Australians were losing $110,000 nationally each month to this scam in 2019, which has been reported across several states.

The scammer tells the victim that their private computer or mobile device has been hacked, and convinced the victim to allow them to install software on their device.

The victims are then tricked into accessing their internet banking, with the caller convincing them to confirm they had not lost any funds.

This allows the scammers to access the victims’ online banking and steal thousands of dollars from their account, police have warned.

Detective Sergeant Craig Windebank, from the NT Police Cyber Crime Unit, said last weekend alone saw Nothern Territory locals report $10,000 of losses to this online fraud.

“To prevent being a victim on these scams, the public need to understand that the NBN is a wholesale communications company and does not sell services directly to the public,” Winebank said.

“The NBN will never request to have remote access to an NT resident’s computer or mobile device. If you receive a suspected scam call, hang up and contact your internet service provider on a number you know or research yourself to confirm if the call was legitimate.”
